WHERE DID LIVENT COME FROM?
Livent Corp. completed its initial public offering from FMC in October 2018. Our roots in the lithium market go back to the 1940s, when we worked with the United States government to develop useful applications for the element as Lithium Corporation of America, which was acquired in 1985 by FMC, the Fortune 500 chemical company. In 1991, we began supplying Sony Electronics the material for its first lithium-ion batteries used in the electronic manufacturer’s hand-held camcorders, enabling them to build smaller, more portable cameras.
In addition, we have been a leader in both lithium extraction and purification technology. As FMC Lithium, Livent purchased an Argentine brine resource, allowing us to pioneer and commercialize a proprietary purification process that extracts lithium chloride from the brine with over 95 percent purity, simultaneously reducing the overall production time when compared to conventional solar evaporation methods.
